The continuous inkjet printing process works by expelling electrically charged ink droplets from a print head nozzle and passing them through an electric field to deflect individual droplets to make up text or codes. In a continuous inkjet, ink comes out of the ink reservoir and is sprayed through a nozzle, creating a continuous stream of ink. The stream is broken down into many ink droplets by rapid vibration at high frequencies.

Continuous printing typically uses contact printing methods, but it can also use optical techniques through a projected slit. This contrasts with intermittent, or step-by-step, printing where each frame of the master film is individually exposed in full. In another context, within inkjet technology, ink jets are transformed into droplets within a chamber, an action initiated by a pulse from a piezoelectric crystal.
